In the behind the scenes of the animated film the little mermaid, it tells us how they had researched the human form by getting people in to act out how they wanted specific scenes to be. they would film the woman and man acting as Ariel and Eric to help guild them when animating the human form. Disney have been doing this technique ever since the animated film Snow white. The animators even added in some of the woman's personality when it came down to animating Ariel, as they has seen the woman playing with her hair while in the of getting filmed and decided to add that into the film.
