Rotoscoping is a form of animation, were the animators will draw frame by frame over footage, this can be seen in The Gorilaz music videos, for example their music video Dare. In this music video the majority of the video is animated but the footage of Shaun Ryder's head has been filmed and then it has been rotoscoped. Max Fleischer was the inventor of the rotoscoping, he would have live footage films playing behind a panel of frosted glass so that he would be about to draw over the footage.
